The Cornell 7 Isn’t Toxic Masculinity. It’s Fake Masculinity.
October 13, 2026
The Cornell 7 Isn’t Toxic Masculinity. It’s Fake Masculinity. It’s time for new language, new expressions, and a new way forward.
Every few months another case breaks, and before the facts are settled, the label is already locked in. Toxic masculinity. This time it’s the Cornell Seven. Last time it was a different campus, a different fraternity, a different name, but the same label stamped on top before anyone had the full story. I’m not here to decide what happened in that house. That’s for the courts and the evidence, not for a headline. What I want to look at is the label itself, because every time it gets used, it’s wrong, and it’s time to retire it.
Let’s be clear about what actually happened here and in every case like it, because clarity matters more than the label does. Hazing is abuse. Non-consensual sex is assault. Date rape is rape, not a gray area and not a misunderstanding. When one human being harms another like this, that’s not a problem to be managed, it’s evil, and it deserves to be named that plainly, without a single qualifier softening it.
But none of that is toxic masculinity. It’s just toxic. There’s no masculine component to what happened, no version of manhood that includes it, which is exactly why the label has always been wrong, not just in this case but in every case it gets reached for.
If Toxic Masculinity Is Real, Where’s Toxic Femininity?
Here’s a question worth sitting with. If masculinity can turn toxic on its own, why doesn’t anyone talk about toxic femininity the same way? It’s not because women are incapable of cruelty. Relational aggression, exclusion, reputation destruction engineered on purpose, is a documented phenomenon researchers have studied for decades because the damage runs deep and lasts. Weaponizing relationships and feelings as leverage shows up in family court too, where custody fights tilt against fathers more often than the system wants to admit, children caught in the middle of a war that was supposed to be about their wellbeing. Parental alienation belongs in that same category, a mother turning a child against a father a little at a time until the child believes the estrangement was always his own idea. Teenage girls have bullied each other straight into suicide, and that’s sitting in coroners’ reports, not internet folklore. The cruelty is real. Nobody disputes that.
And yet nobody calls it toxic femininity, because the moment you say it out loud, something in you objects. That cruelty isn’t femininity. It never was. Femininity didn’t do that. Something else did, and it only borrowed the name because the name gave it cover.
Toxic Love Isn’t Love Either
Try the same test on love, since people reach for that phrase too. Toxic love, the kind that controls you, manipulates you, makes affection conditional on your obedience. It’s real and it’s everywhere, but the moment it starts controlling you, it has already stopped being love. You’re not watching love go bad. You’re watching something that stole the word walk around wearing it.
Which means the pattern holds every time. It isn’t feminine if it’s toxic. It isn’t love if it’s toxic. And it was never masculine either.
So What Is It? The Absence of Masculinity
If it isn’t masculinity gone wrong, then what is it? It’s masculinity gone missing. What showed up in that house at Cornell isn’t manhood turned up too high. It’s manhood that was never built in the first place, and a vacuum like that doesn’t stay in one zip code. It shows up in gang initiations that run on the same hazing logic as a fraternity basement. It shows up in boardrooms that never had a MeToo reckoning, where a casting couch or a corner office works the same leverage a frat house works, just with better furniture. It shows up on trading floors still running the Wolf of Wall Street model, where conquest gets mistaken for culture and nobody’s ever named the absence underneath it.
Every one of those rooms is full of men. None of it is masculine. Toxic, certainly. Masculine, never. A vacuum doesn’t check your tax bracket before it moves in, and the real cause, the absence underneath all of it, keeps getting ignored while the behavior takes the blame.
The War Is the Problem
Here’s the uncomfortable part. The loudest voices calling this toxic masculinity have spent years waging something that looks a lot like war, shame campaigns, blanket indictments of half the population, zero willingness to negotiate or even define terms before condemning them. Aggressive. Dominating. No room for nuance, no room for forgiveness, just conquest. If we’re being honest, and we should be, that posture is itself a toxic masculine approach, dressed up as the cure. I’m aware of the irony in that sentence. Sit with it anyway, because it’s the whole point. You can’t fix a problem using the exact posture you claim is the problem.
What the world doesn’t need is toxic anything. Not toxic masculinity, not toxic femininity, not toxic love, and not a toxic war being waged in the name of fixing any of them. What the world needs is the actual solution, not another version of the problem wearing a righteous mask. Love. Femininity. And yes, masculinity. The real ones, not the counterfeits.
Stay tuned. In part two, we name exactly what that is.
